There have been radical changes to the cluster since last semester. Most noticeably perhaps are the chairs. Now nobody needs to worry about being injured by a rusty spring. We have also increased the Windows fleet to five machines, and added memory to Einstein and Curie. The linux machines have all been equipped with a desktop icon (through KDE) that will connect users to phyhelp's online help chat. Please use it at the first onset of confusion or curiosity.

| For
all of you old-timers who remember the reign of the U5's and bohrlp,
there has been a printer change. The new printer is named Laserjet
and should be set as your default printer. |

We have replaced the SUN
workstations with 5, much faster x86 machines running Gentoo Linux
2.4.24-openmosix-r4. This load-balancing cluster has full MPI
parallel computing capabilities. For questions about how to
implement MPI, please contact your phyhelp administrators.

We have finished the upgrade of the Ultra 5 machines to run Aurora Linux 1.0. We hope the machies are faster and more useful than before.
Printing Change
Posted by Mark K. - January 16 2003
We needed to move the printer from a Sparc 5 running Solaris to a Ultra Sparc 5 running Aurora Linux today. The new machine name is still bohr so other than the physical move by the printer, everything else should be the same.
Page Update
Posted by Mark K. - January 02 2003
Finally, a much needed page update! In case you have not noticed, the cluster has been converted from a Solaris based system to a Linux based one. This was done to both ease the administration duties and to provide a faster environment for our users. There are two main desktops, KDE and Gnome, one may choose to use. The administrators feel the KDE enviroment is currenlty the more complete setup and recommend using this as your main desktop enviroment. It has been recently updated to the latest stable version so if you have tried it in the past and found it slow, please try it now. We are also working to provide a Microsoft Office compatible solution for the unix-based machines. Of course, the Windows-based machines all have Microsoft Office installed.
