Textbook: Physics (fifth edition) by J. D. Cutnell and K. W. Johnson (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.)

Laboratory: PHY151 is offered in parallel with PHY101. A separate grade will be given for PHY151 by the lab instructor.

Homework: Problems are assigned each week and are expected to be handed in at the beginning of the class the assignment is due. Assignments not handed in on time will not be accepted.

Examinations: 1st Exam To be announced

2nd Exam To be announced

Final Exam To be announced

All exams are closed-book. You can, however, bring a one-page summary of the materials covered in the exam (with any formulas and constants you wish to write on it). No other written or printed materials are allowed or provided.

All exams consist of problems similar in style to those in homework assignments. Exams will be graded and returned to you. You may request regrading of your exam within one week after it has been returned to you. The request should be given to the instructor in person and consists of a written note specifying which problems you wish regraded and why you believe the problems were incorrectly graded. Only one regrade request is accepted for each exam. Exams that have been tampered with or altered in any way will result in an automatic F for the course. Graded exams will be photocopied at random.

The acceptable excuses for missing an exam are sickness at the time of the exam (certified by a doctor), a major emergency, and a direct conflict with another exam. The instructor should be informed as soon as possible (by phone or email, if necessary). If you meet these requirements, you may request a make up exam.

Grading: The final grade will be computed as follows:

Homework/recitation 15%

1st Exam 25%

2nd Exam 25%

Final Exam 35%

Bonus (Attendance) 5%

The purpose of the homework assignments are to help you understand the material and to prepare you for the exams. It is, therefore, much more practical to have a good understanding of the homework problems for the exams than to get good homework grades. Quizzes in recitation will be based on homework assignments.

Incomplete: An Incomplete grade can only be requested by those who are at a passing level at the time of the final exam, but are not able to take the final exam because of sickness or a major emergency.

Students with Disabilities: If you have a disability of any kind that would require special accommodations, please contact the Office of Disability Services, 25 Capen Hall, 645-2608.
